Description

Start: Layby at Kirkland NY 64404 32553
Distance: 25k
Duration: 10 hours
Direction: NNE up Melmerby Fell, then NE to Smittergill Head by mistake, NE 500m to the building shown (this is Melmerby Shop Bothy), then SE following Ousby Fell track, then turning at Black Burn, SSW direct to Greg's Hut then SW over Cross Fell, Little Dun and Great Dun, descending W Eller Gill.
Description: Enjoyed the walk but faced much worse weather than forecast. Started heavy rain above 500m and very poor visibility and did not stop! I made several errors in navigation which resulted in changes to the route, added time. Learning points (LP).
1. On Melmerby Fell, off path, I erred too far E and somehow missed the path in thick fog - crossing straight over it. This meant a tricky off path section through bogs. Used GPS to relocate.
(LP) Don't rush - double and triple check direction with compass.
2. Black burn off path was hard going and the stream was in a deep cutting.
(LP) Climb to the top of the cutting sides rather than persevere in the bottom of the V.
3. Missed intended path at Tees Head on descent from Cross Fell - no sign of path.
(LP) Instead of soldiering on hoping to find path, rely on map or GPS locate. Many of the paths on Cross Fell do not exist in reality or are washed out or not clearly visible in peat bog in wet weather.
Nevertheless, went to 3 bothies today and really enjoyed this walk. Photo was during the best weather of the day!!!
