Description

Start: Spittal of Glenmuick NO 31037 85133
Distance: 18k
Duration: 10 hours
Direction: W direct route on track then steeply rising by loch above Lochnagar to summit. Descent SE alongside Glas Allt at first gradually then steeply to loch. Lochside track NE to return to car park.
Description: This was a problem walk. My Dad was getting on and wanted to walk this, his favourite mountain, one last time. On way down he fell over twice with blood pressure problem (he has this but it has not previously affected him this way). My mother panicked and wanted to press on. I wanted to stop and rest - which we did for half an hour but should have been longer. No phone signal. Dad fell over twice more.
Learning point (LP) be clearer about advice and Mountain leader qualification will help give authority.
In the event, we managed to slowly walk dad down to Loch Muick and get him back to the car in the dark at 10pm (I had a torch). Good job I had equipment in case.

Area : Braemar to Montrose (Lochnagar)

Listed in the SMC Munros Guide as ‘The East Mounth: Glen Shee to Mount Keen’, this area includes all of the peaks to the south and east of the A93. Still part of the Cairngorms National Park, these mountains are home to the north facing crags on Lochnagar (1155m) and the most easterly Munro, Mount Keen (939m).
