Description

Left Linn of Dee at 16.30 on an overcast late afternoon, arriving at Red House bothy at 18.00. 7 people & a dog in bothy but not rowdy & a civilised bedtime. I had attempted this pair of winter hills 5 weeks before but failed to cross the frozen R.Geldie.
I slept badly & noticed the sky had cleared in the night. I was up at 6.15 as it was already getting light, & away by 7.10 in early sun, but cold. I worked hard to the Geldie crossing (& all day) & crossed easily at 8.00. Round traverse path & up the east end of a significant patch of brick hard old snow. Then up ridge in new snow to top at 10.00.
South along ridge above snow & down to bealach then up to An Sgarsoch. Strengthening cold wind on top. East to a spur leading to Geldie Lodge. Got out the axe to get down a snow patch. Back at bothy by 13.30. Quick brew & repack. Left at 14.05, back at car at 15.30.

Area : Glen Tromie to Glen Tilt (Beinn Dearg)

This area includes the mountains in the Cairngorms National Park which lie between Glen Tromie in the west and Glen Tilt in the south of the park. The northern boundary is the River Feshie and to the south, the A9. There are four Munros in the area, the tallest being Beinn Dearg at 1008m, and the area is typically made up of peaty plateaux with the occasional pointy peak.
