Duke of Edinburgh Bronze practice walk day.
Split 49 students into their groups, previous day they’d worked on their route plans etc.
Used radios, trackers on WhatsApp to keep track with staff. Stayed on close supervision.
I took two groups as I am qualified, one group had higher send needs so stayed with them on close supervision. With the other group I used a number of questions to inform their decisions and allowed them to move ahead to each checkpoint before waiting for myself to get them to relocate and plan their next part.
Each checkpoint I swapped navigation roles, and encouraged the group to look around them at different interesting parts. At river crossings I taught about how to cross the river, at an area of flat land I taught how to do pacing.
Each point the students gave me direction, distance, potential duration and any potential hazards. This worked really well in developing smart choices and planning.
Overall a fantastic day!
