Total Distance 17.9km. Total Journey time 7hrs. 1118m ascent.
Winter conditions. Ascent to summit via rangers track and return via same route. This initially provided navigation challenges through the low level quarries, however buildings, straight line map features and boundary lines provided good reference points to locate the path. From this point the focus turned to staying within limitations of equipment taken in the conditions presented. No crampons used so caution above icing line at 600m. A cold day with -11 degree summit temperatures and intermittent snow flurries. Generally clear skies and very good vis. Chose to retrace tracks for return rather than descend the unknown snowpack on Rhyd-Ddu path. Full day on the hill with night nav to return to vehicle.
Learning Points:
- Important to exercise caution in winter conditions, especially if the group is not equipped/experienced.
- Consideration of incline of the route can give an indication of whether crampons are essential or not.
- Importance of carrying a head torch as a group leader - these were essential for the last part of the day.
