The road down Glen Strathfarrar is not open for driving down in the winter. With a handful of munros to go, I found a route in from the north. Walking in to Luibmaldrig bothy, our base for 2 nights, five of us, friends.
We set off in the dark to the bothy, with knee deep snow, snowshoes here and there where it was possible to use them due to terrain issues. 6km to the bothy 2..5 hours.
Day 2 was planned for the 4 Strathfarrar munros, however we already knew with the amount of snow this wouldnt happen. Five of us taking turns to break trail, getting blown over, using snow shoes in places to track (deep snow over heather and pathless terrain with rocky sections). Crampons not needed. It took8 hours to get one of the peaks as a there and back, 13.7km.
Day 3 we walked back out to the cars. Again 2.5 hours. High winds on the summit and no visibility helped make the decision for not attempting to continue.
Area :
Glen Cannich to Glen Carron
This area covers the peaks north of Loch Mullardoch and south of the A890/A832 Strathcarron to Garve road. The fourteen Munros in the area are handily split into two ridges either side of Glen Strathfarrar and a cluster of five to the north and west of Loch Monar. Sgurr na Lapaich (1150m) and An Riabhachan (1129) are the highest peaks on the southern side while Sgurr a’ Choire Ghlais (1083m) is the tallest on the northern side. Mountains in the list are all about 900m. The area to the south of this is Glen Affric and Kintail.
