A snowshoe day to get this Munro, with us able to use them from 550m to the summit and back. Deep drifts and moderate avalanche forecast meant being very conservative with the route to stay out of terrain traps with an approach from East to West, taking a wide berth of the steep easterly face to gain the summit safely. Strong westerly winds, giving huge drifts and cornices, quite early in the year.
19.5km, 8.5 hours. Three of us taking turns to track the lead. And my dog!
Visbility in and out from 750 metres, a lot of map reading to negotiate the route and keep safe.
Area :
Glen Lyon to Glen Dochart & Loch Tay (Ben Lawers)
This area covers the peaks to the north and east of Crianlarich. Glen Lyon forms the northern boundary while the road from Crianlarich to Aberfeldy is the southern boundary. The Ben Lawers group in the east of this area includes seven separate peaks, all Munros, which are part of an impressive 12km ridge line. The western side of this area is generally lower and not as steep but does still home some a number of Munros. All major peaks above 600m are included in the mountains list. The area to the north is Loch Rannoch to Glen Lyon.
