Description

Leaving Friday evening from Kentmere Church we set off with our packs to spend a night on the hill, It had already gotten dark and we needed the headtorches on. Headed up Garburn pass opting to follow the main path given how wet it had been. We followed the path to the top of the pass and turned north towards yoke we followed the path until a the gradient eased at 540m. From here we crossed the wall and chose to practice night nav choosing a single contour crag feature at 300m. Took a bearing and paced this. the feature was quite insignificant so required a bit of proving walking further and looking back from another small crag. Returning to our orignal point we were sure we had it and confirmed using OS maps on a phone. Next I chose another leg and took a bearing towards a sheepfold and a steeper climb. This was an easy feature as we aimed off joining a wall and travelled slightly southwest along to easily arrive at the sheepfold. From here the wall was easy to follow maintaining roughly 600m before arriving at a junction and taking a bearing straight to a small tarn above Rainsborrow Crag this we hit easily following a bearing and pacing 200m for practice. We found the tarn but were in a more exposed spot and the wind quite strong. Descending slightly we found other small tarns, not on 1:25000. We found one to be sheltered and an ideal spot for the night and sunrise in the morning. A good evening of night nav practiced.
The morning produced at first a glow of orange cloud on the horizon then gradually a brilliant sunrise and clouds rollled in like an inversion. We summited yoke having already enjoyed a slow morning of breakfast, coffees and a wander between all the small tarns and crags. We sat in the sun and then descended back to the valley to get breakfast and follow up with a run in the afternoon.

Area : Far Eastern Fells

Reaching their highest point at High Street(828 metres) they occupy a broad area to the east of Ullswater and Kirkstone Pass. Much quieter than the central areas of Lakeland they offer in general easier but less exciting walking as the fells merge mainly into the surrounding moorlands. Exceptions however are the fine rock scenery to be seen surrounding the head of Haweswater
