Day 1 of embley tors training. Students started really well, each student offered to take a segment of the route. In between little teaching points including bearing out to avoid certain obstacles, moving and using pacing. Also route choice and how we can avoid damaging environment. Some interesting points picked up including fungi like the crystal brain fungus and devils fingers. Students set up camp quickly and showed good campcraft, quickly heating things up.
At a point, I taught how to cross rivers in groups to include hip/chest belts relaying the accident in Dartmoor but also taught the line and arrow formations to cross safely and effectively. All students, when planning routes on rivers, we’re aware that the best way to cross a river is to avoid rivers.
