Description

An excellent day on the western part of South Shiel Ridge. Ground frozen from the off & light snow above 750m, I was glad to have brought axe & crampons. Up the N ridge of Pt 902m, another nice Kintail ridge. Then along main ridge to Sgurr an Doire Leathan, Sgurr an Lochain & Creag nan Damh, where I met the only other person enjoying the day. Very little wind generally but I measured a max of 12mph on Sgurr an Lochain with best temperatures just above freezing. Then back to Sgurr Beag & down the NE ridge - narrow in places, with a bit of forest bashing at the end.

Area : Loch Eil to Glen Shiel

The Great Glen to the east, the A87 to the north and the A830 to the south separate this area from its surroundings and enclose an area of high mountains and low glens. The highest mountain is Sgurr na Ciche (1040m) and further north the South Glen Shiel Ridge is formed by a whopping seven Munros! Also in the area is The Saddle (1010m) which is home to the classic Forcan Ridge. Peaks in the mountains list are all above 900m.
