With 2 adult clients looking at steep climbing. Session plan was:
Warm up using RAMP principle on mezzanine area.
Moved on to easy boulders on slightly overhanging terrain. We climbed boulders 3 times trying 1. remaining front on, 2. Side on with both feet on holds, 3. Side on with one foot on hold and other flagging. - This worked well in demonstrating different options and allowed the clients to feel those differences. I think it may have been a bit too much information to absorb in one hit
We then moved on to a 30 degree wall and attempted to climb 3 different boulders by only making hand moves while side on. The hip and hand drill. Feet could do whatever they needed to to achieve this - This drill worked well and gave the clients an understandable practice drill to take away.
The clients were then asked to go away and find an overhanging climb where they could apply this to every move - this worked despite the slightly limited options at the time
I then introduced the concept of drop knees and gave the clients a problem to practice them on. They were then asked to go away and find a climb which required at least 1 drop knee move. Both managed this and demonstrated a good understanding of what to look for to apply this technique
Overall I felt the session went well although the initial review of steep ground techniques could have been broken down a bit more and allowed more time to play around with how each style feels. The finding moves elsewhere worked well to demonstrate knowledge
