Description

-Clear day, no rain, slight breeze. Start at 8 am, checked my OS map app and followed the road for about10 minute walk to start of trail which was next to Belfast zoo, entering the zoo car park to begin
- The start of the trail had a map info board and warnings for rock falls and lots of fallen Birch trees over the path which had been there for some time. Short incline walk through a wooded area. Very slippy rocks of flint on the path and muddy as had rained the night before. Ducking under fallen Birch trees.
-Reaching the plateau, amazing views over Belfast bay and the surrounding area. Mc Art's fort (AKA Napoleon's nose) quickly vising from leaving wooded area. Reached the Iron Age fort, partial ramparts on the right side, left side a sharp drop from the cliff face. Mc Arts fort was allegedly used for refuge over the years from weather and enemies
-After spending some time at the top, I orientated myself and the OS map app to walk towards a visible fort on another hilltop near a limestone quarry called 'Collinward'. The walk there was fairly newly paved, neighbouring heather and gorse. Top of the other fort, 2 rock cairns on the top and medium-sized erected rock, unsure of whether modernly erected or Mesolithic. Large mast on the top
-Walk back down to Mc Art's fort then down the same way I came up around 11:40. Weather still good, slight breeze and overcast. Reached base of the trail at 12:30

Area : Belfast Hills

Divis , Black Mountain, Cave Hill plus other surrounding hills.
