Description

Peak district: Summited Grindslow Knoll, Kinder Low, Kinder Scout
Using OS map and compass
I began my walk at Edale station. I orientated myself and my map and started off in the direction of Grindslow Knoll to start off. Cloud settled just as the mountain begins to rise, decided that I still had decent visuals and could continue safely to summit today. Grindslow Knoll summited. I carried onwards and followed the paved route, checking my direction using my compass and map. Sadly with the poor visibility at this point I couldn't fully appreciate the landscape around me or the other surrounding hills, I did however find it very peaceful to be alone and silent.
Passing through the 'Woolpacks', very interesting and odd shaped rock weathering. As seen on the map data I uploaded; I tried to get across the plateau and reach Kinder Scout, I had to turn back to the main path as the bog was particularly deep in parts and didn't want to risk any injury as I was hiking alone and the visibility was poor. I can imagine that it is possible to walk across the top of the plateau on a dry and sunny day.
Kinder Low - trig point at the top, I stopped and made my lunch, sheltered my a large boulder from the wind. I brought my stove, a bag of dried food and well needed coffee. After I finished, I set off again for the Kinder Scout mark on my map. I had no choice but to cut across some bog but managed to stick to the parts which were more rocky and above ground. I realised that the boggier parts had almost orange grass growing out of, this made it far easier for me to judge If I could safely walk across. Made it to the summit which had a very small pile of rocks to signify the top. Still with low cloud and poor visibility I started to make it back to Kinder Low and then joined the Pennine Way. This took me to Jacob's Ladder which brought be below the low cloud and I had good visibility from there on. Made it to Upper Booth farm and followed the path back to Barber Booth where I caught my train home from Edale station

Area : Dark Peak

Is situated between Sheffield and Manchester. The underlying rock is Millstone grit which is often exposed at the edge of the higher peat bogs for which the area is famous.
