Description

Summit Day for Kilimanjaro. There was snow on the ground from around 5400m. The snow became pretty icy, and with high winds a little tricky. Group management was also rather hard as there were so many people queuing and pushing. A deep trough was made but I chose to kick another to get my group away from the crowds of people slipping around. Spikes would have been VERY useful here.
The summit was several metres deep, incredibly icy and in full winter conditions. My local team were not good, and definitely I wish I would have gone with my gut instinct to pack spikes given this was February and therefore wintery weather was to be expected.
Everyone summited and the route down I chose a little off piste to be able to heel plunge some softer snow for safety, making new tracks down and more able to manage my group.
Good visibility, but goggles would have also been useful with the strong winds.
