Description

A Rockhoppers MC trip. With strong SE/SEE winds forecast and poor visibility it was hoped that Lurcher's Crag might provide some shelter. This proved a good choice. Although we were buffetted on the path up from the ski centre once we dropped into Lurchers Gully the effect of the wind was negligible. There was one awkward snowpatch and some careful navigation in the mist was required to find the sketchy path to the summit. Descent was by the ridge towards the Chalamain Gap. As we dropped down we encountered gusty blasts that made walking awkward as we entered the mouth of the Lairig Ghru. Return to Glenmore Lodge was made via Rothiemurchus and Loch Morlich as the winds were due to pick up in the afternoon.

Area : The Cairngorms

The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
