This nice little route provided a great mix of everything, from the initial incline on mixed minor paths/no visible paths, navigational challenge around false summits with few defining features, and good views out over the central fells, all while being in the shelter of surrounding higher peaks, providing a windbreak from the worst of most weathers. The well defined footpath return provides a comfortable cool-down, or kind warm-up depending on clockwise or anti-clockwise completion.
With more storm force winds forecast (55mph gusting 74mph SW), we had a morning shopping in Keswick then decided on a late-in-the-day loop over the moors. This provided plenty of shelter with the occasional spot of wind exposure making it hard to stand. Due to starting late in the day, we went prepared for a night-nav return. Conditions on this route did not reflect the forecast, which likely predicted conditions on near-by peaks. The shelter this provided facilitated an enjoyable trip, with impressive sunset over a dramatic panorama of surrounding fells, and a pleasant night nav return.
