Synopsis -
Planned 16km hike to Ben Macdui from the Ski Resort as an out and back route. Ascending the ridge of Miadan Creag an Lech-choin and across to Lochan Buidhe It felt really good to have snow under foot. All winter equipment was packed in the rucksack including crampons and ice-axe. Navigation Skills were improved when the visibility came in to approx 25 m by walking on a bearing for a known time , feeling the ground features change helped around Cairn Lochan to the plateau and 1125 cairn stone at Lochan Buidhe. The visibility did not improve throughout the journey and remained the same until we came back down the ridge of Miadan Creag an Lech-choin and a lower altitude, occasionally the cloud lifted but only momentarily.

Area :
The Cairngorms
The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
