Description

Climbing with RCi Nathan Bonnie. Instruction in running belays etc. Observed his setting up in difficult conditions and spoke about alternatives and client safety.
The climbs appeared relatively straight forward at Gilwern. however, soon apparent that the recent rain had made all cracks very wet and muddy. Climbing shoes became useless after a couple of moves. This route would be great when dry, however the finish was very hard in wet conditions.
Poor belay points at top. Old stakes that I would not use with clients.
Not a great days climbing due to conditions of rock and weather.
Repeated with top rope to compare without the pressure of trad.
We decided to stop after a few climbs as we felt it was not worth the risk due to worsening conditions. Will return when the weather improves...hopefully.
