James 'lost' his phone - started late (11am)
Haystacks, High Crag, High Stile - very windy and poor vis. Tried to bail out sooner to Buttermere but wind was too strong to descend on poor track so backtracked back to ridge, we were slowed by late start and a flare up of a previous painful condition of mine. Wind so strong we couldn't walk on path at edge so ended up bearing point to point over the tops, walking on bearing with James backing me up on GPS as vis was so poor. I paced 200m, turned to James to ask how that was and his response was 199.5m (Can't argue with that!). At one stage considered SLEEPING OUT which would have been unpleasent given the wind/rain/mist. James's torch failed so I would walk on a bearing, he would get me to stop when he could only just about see the glowstick on my bag and I would turn to guide his way. Made very slow progress. Updated mate each hour as to our location and progress who we were due to meet up and stay with in Penrith. He walked up to meet up and we met him at the tarn as 1am!!!! Car in valley for 2am. Bed zzzzzzz
Area :
Western Fells
The Western Fells form the southern wall of the Buttermere valley and the northern fence of Wasdale. Between the two lies Ennerdale so that in effect the group is the shape of a single horseshoe, each branch about 10 miles in length.
At the head of Ennerdale stands Great Gable. The southern arc of the group travels due west from Great Gable, the main ridge consisting of Kirk Fell, Pillar, Scoat Fell, Haycock and Caw Fell.
