Description

Champoluc - Rifugio Jean Barmasse.

Peaks/Cols Crossed:

⛰️ Col de Nannaz (2775m)
⛰️ Col des Fontaines (2694m)

Exhausted and struggling with sleepiness, I made my way up to Rifugio Grand Tournalin during this leg of the Tor des Géants (TDG) route. The climb was gruelling, but somehow I managed to reach the refuge. Upon arrival, I checked in and took a much-needed power nap. Although it was dark when I arrived, the morning light greeted me as I woke up, and I felt significantly better, though still far from my usual energy levels.
The terrain on this section was reminiscent of the UK, with grassy hills, wildflowers, and various single tracks branching off in different directions. It brought to mind the mountains around the Lake District, offering a brief sense of familiarity in the midst of the challenge. As I descended towards Valtournenche, another UK delight encounter - the rain returned, soaking me to the bone by the time I reached the valley. I took shelter, refuelled with some much-needed food and warm fluids, and waited out the torrential rain before continuing on my journey. The break provided a brief respite, allowing me to gather strength for the next push to Rifugio Jean Barmasse.

Challenges:

Physical: Extreme fatigue and sleepiness made the ascent to the rifugio particularly challenging.
Mental: Staying focused and motivated while battling exhaustion and dealing with the discomfort of being soaked in the rain.
Terrain: Varied terrain with grassy hills and single tracks, reminiscent of the UK, but with the added challenge of rain-soaked descents.
Navigation: Easier in daylight, but care was needed to stay on track, especially in the more familiar, yet diverse, terrain.

This leg was a test of endurance, particularly in managing fatigue and staying mentally sharp despite the challenging conditions. The familiar terrain offered some comfort, but the relentless rain during the descent was a tough obstacle. Taking shelter in Valtournenche and waiting out the worst of the weather was a crucial decision, allowing me to recover slightly before continuing. This section reinforced the importance of listening to your body and taking the necessary breaks to maintain the strength needed to complete such demanding treks.
