Description

Leg 6 - Dufton to Alston

Peaks:
⛰️ Knock Fell (794 m)
⛰️ Great Dunfell (848m)
⛰️ Little Dun Fell (842 m)
⛰️ Cross Fell (893 m)

After leaving Dufton, we hiked up towards Great Dun Fell on muddy and slippery trails. The weather worsened, with cold winds, snow, and falling temperatures. I felt unusually cold despite multiple layers, while Clarens struggled with his breathing, needing frequent stops to use his inhaler. The climb to Cross Fell was tough, with low visibility and harsh conditions. We finally reached Greg's Hut, where we warmed up and ate, recovering from the cold. After leaving, we encountered a challenging mix of disorientation, exhaustion, and cold, navigating through rough terrain and strong winds. Clarens experienced breathing difficulties, forcing us to slow down. The relentless cold and hallucinations from sleep deprivation made progress feel incredibly slow, but we eventually reached the village of Garrigill, where we found shelter and food, providing a morale boost. We continued towards Alston, encountering another struggling runner, and navigated through fields with some challenges. Finally, we reached the Alston checkpoint, relieved to be out of the cold and wind.
