Mill Hill (544 m)
Bleaklow head (633m)
Black Hill (582 m)
The first leg of the Winter Spine 2024 began with an unexpected challenge when somewhere through kinder scout, I stepped on ice and broke through, resulting in my right leg plunging into freezing cold water. I scraped my shin against a Roman slab as I fell, adding physical pain to the cold. This was a tough start to a 265-mile trek. Later, I experienced dizziness and faintness, which I now believe was the beginning of a hypoglycaemic episode. I had some jelly babies, a tracker bar and extra water, which gradually improved my condition. Despite this, I continued slowly without stopping. As I approached Hebden Bridge, it grew dark, adding to the challenge. This leg of the route ended with me reaching Hebden Bridge under challenging conditions but relieved to have made it through the first segment.
