I organized a long day out for a group of 6 to recce the Tan Hill to Dufton section of the Pennine Way as part of our preparation for the Spine Race. The bogs were frozen solid, making the hiking easier than expected. One of the group members, Bill, was struggling to keep up and let me know just after Middleton in Teasdale. He wanted to continue alone, but I spoke to the group and we decided 'as a group' to slow everything down and match his pace. This adjustment made the day more manageable and ensured everyone’s safety and enjoyment.
As we approached the top of High Cup Nick, it was already pitch black, so we missed the sunset, but the group remained in good spirits. The day took slightly longer than anticipated, which I’ve noted for future planning. Overall, it was a successful and enjoyable day out on the Pennine way, with the group working well together despite the challenges.
