Description

Freelancing for another provider.
2 instructors, 3 teachers and 20 students. Myself leading the walk.
The aim was to walk the groups from YHA Manorbier to Manorbier Beach and castle.
The route followed the established Welsh Coastal Path West and the terrain was easy and relatively flat. However the path if popular and narrow, which meant group management was crucial to ensure that students and members of the public weren't put at risk along the walk.
Pacing was overall good and we made the beach in good time. We spend some time on the beach and in the castle. After that we walked the group back via the footpath leading back to YHA Manorbier via St James's Church.
No issues encountered. Things to be aware of with a walk like this:
- Hydration, bring more water than you need and make sure that all students have at least one litre+ of water before the walk.
- Behaviour, group management is crucial and briefing the teachers prior to the walk was essential. Brief them on everything including road safety procedures.
- Exposure, bring plenty of sun cream and ensure all student have their own sun cream. UV level's can get very high here.
For an instructor, this environment is not one to get complacent. The path got close to the cliff edge and sometimes to some unguarded steep drops.
