With a group of five we planned Old Man Of Coniston from Coniston following Church Beck to the YHA. looking at basic navigation for the group. From the YHA we headed up the western side od the waterfall to Levers Water. Following round to the Eastern side of the water. Towards high fell. We turned off the track towards Great How Crags. A member of the group at around 600m look unsteady on his feet. It soon came apparent he was not comfortable in this type of rocky terrain. So making a time appropriation I decided to descend and have a comfortable walk down and time at the Levers Water. We discussed mountain hazards, kit, equipment and layering. Good teaching day and dynamic RA used.
Area :
Southern Fells (Scafell Pike)
The Southern Fells Include Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England, occupy a broad area to the south of Great Langdale, Borrowdale and Wasdale. High and rocky towards the centre of the Lake District, the Southern Fells progressively take on a moorland character toward the south west. In the south east are the well known Furness Fells, their heavily quarried flanks rising above Coniston Water.
