A hike from Egmont visitor centre to the summit of Mount Taranaki. This was a very challenging climb involving 1000 meters of pure scree scrambling on loose pumice gravel. At the top it became a rock scramble and then a hike over ice to the summit rim. It is not possible to stand on the vary top as the mountain is sacred to the Mouri.
the way down was much easier providing I walked confidently and used walking poles to stop myself sliding too far.
Navigation was not difficult once the volcanic cone was in view.
