Description

A skills day with Liam, Helen and Jen. I did some demonstration instruction to show Jen what was needed for Winter ML and then supervised as appropriate for the rest of the day. Topics covered included: Breaking trail & footwork on snow, crampon work, basic understanding of snow types (i.e. wind slab and neve), snow holes (we had lunch in pre-built snow holes and discussed their merits). Was Laim and Helen`s second ever day out in winter.

Area : The Cairngorms

The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
