Description

From west side of river beside Auchlean followed track across river. Followed south edge of woodland round to Allt Fhearnagan and crossed over onto track leading to Carn Ban Mor. Micro navigation practice through 'graveyard' ticking off numerous features to ring contour north of Tom Dubh. From here navigated back to Carn Ban Mor via various micro features including spot height of 876m and re-entrant system of Allt Sgairnich.
Mostly a day of clear visibility but with short periods of lesser visibility. Wind speeds did not exceed 30mph throughout majority of day but were felt more strongly from the north and east in afternoon during descent. Snow conditions underfoot made for tough going at times, with many areas of windslab. Overall journey time exceeded 8 hours and final descent was in the dark.

Area : The Cairngorms

The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
