Supervising an introductory winter hill walking day for a group of 4 young people plus adult leader. After sorting out kit and briefing at base, we set out from Arrochar, heading up the path to the bealach between the Cobbler and Beinn Narnain, before moving onto the W facing slopes of Narnain to practice some basic winter movement skills. The original plan A had been to ascend the Cobbler, but the snow conditions were a bit sketchy, and several of the young people were feeling the cumulative effects of carrying bigger packs and heavier boots, so we opted to do some more skills work, before timing our return to finish the journey by torchlight for a `proper` winter day.
Area :
Inveraray to Crianlarich (Ben Lui)
From the Arrochar Alps to Ben Lui, this area is home to nine Munros. Half of the peaks in the area are within the boundaries of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, while the others lie to the west. The three summits of The Cobbler (884m) contain some of the best climbing in the Southern Highlands while Ben Lui in winter looks positively Alpine. Access is relatively straightforward from the A83, A82 or A85.
