Day walk with a mother and 11 year old daughter - mum wanted to learn some basic winter movement skills, daughter wanted to have some fun in the snow! Weather forecast for the day mad for challenging conditions; 50-60mph winds and possibility of significant falls of snow. With the snow line at around 500m, I was keen to try and find a reasonably sheltered location from the westerly wind that would let us remain fairly static for an hour or so without getting too chilled. After considering various options, I went for Ben Ledi, planning on heading up to just below the south end of the main ridge. This plan worked pretty well - there was plenty of snow in the area, although a lot of it was soft windslab lying on top of the vegetation. We managed to do some basic footwork and use of the ice axe, then spent a bit of time making a slide before building a `shovel up` to have lunch in.
