Day 6 of Winter Skills and Mountaineering Course with the Austrian Alpine Club based out of Killin.
Another Scottish weather day. Very snowy and windy, we decided to stay low and had a day looking at Emergency Shelters and Avalanche Companion Rescue with Transceivers. Workshop style day, I was working with Liam Fleming delivering the Snow Shelters element. We initially talked about realistic contexts and scenarios where we might need to dig a snow shelter and the reality of spending an unplanned night in one. We then looked at personal emergency shelters for one person dug with an ice axe, before then connecting some of them together and creating snow holes. Very soft snow to deal with made digging easy. We also looked at constructing blocks from soft snow to create lintels and walls.
Area :
Glen Lyon to Glen Dochart & Loch Tay (Ben Lawers)
This area covers the peaks to the north and east of Crianlarich. Glen Lyon forms the northern boundary while the road from Crianlarich to Aberfeldy is the southern boundary. The Ben Lawers group in the east of this area includes seven separate peaks, all Munros, which are part of an impressive 12km ridge line. The western side of this area is generally lower and not as steep but does still home some a number of Munros. All major peaks above 600m are included in the mountains list. The area to the north is Loch Rannoch to Glen Lyon.
