Description

60. Ogwen Cottage to Glyder Fawr via Ordinary Route, The Arete, Continuation Wall, and Central Arete. Weather forecast: light rain (80% chance), -5 wind chill on the tops. Duration: 6.5 hours. Group: Jon Price, Mike Doyle.
Mike suggested we solo’ed Ordinary Route, and we did and overtook a couple climbing with ropes. We then took an age to work out where The Arete was. Once we found it, I led, using about 4 slings and a couple of nuts over the whole route (not much gear on it!). And my big B2 boots.
After the Arete, Mike and Jon were cold, so we took the executive decision to bail on the Central Arete and to just keep moving. We’d also been lucky that the forecast rain had held off, so didn’t want to chance our luck. We continued up the cliff to the top into the clouds, just one brief shower. I navigated in the fog to the summit, found toward the scree slope down to LLyn y Cwn, then down Devil’s Kitchen as quickly as possible, to get to the Ogwen Cottage Visitor Centre for a cup of tea.
