Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor
I have known George King since 2010 both as a climbing and mountaineering partner, but also as his colleague delivering Indoor and Outdoor Climbing training while working at our local climbing centre and running our University climbing club together. On a personal level, George and I first met while at University where our mutual passion of the outdoors led us to forge a highly successful climbing partnership and firm friendship. With him I've enjoyed the full range of UK mountain experiences, undertaking the Cuillin Traverse, Winter climbing trips in the Nevis Range and Cairngorms, summer scrambling in Snowdonia and the Lake District as well as sea cliff climbing in Cornwall. He combines technical ability and high fitness levels with good humour, making him an excellent partner in the outdoors. Where George truly shines however, is in delivering high quality instruction and good experiences to participants when he is in a leadership role. As alluded to above, George and I worked together both at out local climbing centre but also running the University climbing club of which we were President and Vice-President respectively during our studies. During this time we would often be taking responsibility for groups to ensure both their safety and enjoyment, as well as to teach them the skills to allow them to look after themselves on the rock. George is an excellent teacher, particularly of the outdoor skills which he has such a passion for and I can think of a large number of people that now owe their own enjoyment of the outdoors to George's enthusiasm and skill at teaching. On a more practical leadership level, he is highly attuned to the needs of the group, adjusting plans to ensure that they enjoy their day, at a level appropriate to them. He's also a cool head when one is required with excellent mountain sense. Within my roll within MREW and the BCRC, I often refer to the stretcher test when selecting new team members; would I trust this individual to help me carry a stretcher off the hill at 2am in the rain, George sits at the top of that list. I can highly commend George for a place on the MCI scheme. Tom Mather Team Leader - Technical Rescue Unit (Rope and Underground) West Cornwall Search and Rescue Team
