I registered on the Mountain Training scheme in 2000. Since then I have progressed through the awards currently holding the Mountaineering Instructor (MIA) and Mountain Leader Winter (MLW) awards and am working towards the Mountaineering Instructor Certificate (MIC). I have climbed extensively in the UK with a passion for Mountainous or adventurous locations and adventures; I have also traveled and or climbed in many remote locations and led expeditions to Denali, Greenland, Morocco and Mongolia.
Reference for Tim Houldey Tim is a very capable and proficient climber and instructor, that I have observed teaching and guiding in different parts of the UK. This has ranged from sea cliffs to mountain crags. He has a high degree of knowledge and competence that encompasses all aspects of mountaineering and instructing. I have observed him teaching novices how to belay and taking more advanced clients on their first multi pitch route or on to sea cliffs for the first time. He is a very reliable safe and understanding instructor that can solve any problem that arises. Tim also has a high competence in first aid being military patrol medic in the military and has worked on many of their advanced courses and expeditions to the Himalayas and Alaska. I have personally climbed with Tim since early 2010 and in that time have completed a vast array of climbs and adventures, from Aid climbing through caves to Tower ridge in a whiteout on Ben Nevis. Whenever we climb together we are always pushing our own personal standards and know and rely upon each other in any and all situations that arise on the crag or mountain. His navigation and knowledge of the hills and history of mountaineering in the UK is excellent, along with his preparations for each day. Tim has aspirations of working full time in the outdoors after retiring from the military in two years time where he eventually hopes to gain the MIC award and live and work full time in the instructing community. He is an excellent candidate for the MIA and will impress you throughout the assessment with his knowledge of all aspects of the syllabus and his local knowledge of North Wales where he has spent a lot of time building up all of the skills and pre requisites for the scheme. Kind regards Tom Thorne

Tim is a keen climber, mountaineer and outdoor instructor who has gained a wide variety of experience over many years both in the UK and throughout the worlds mountain regions. I have climbed with him in summer and winter and I can vouch for his experience, competence, leadership and teaching ability. Tim is always keen to introduce novices to mountaineering and climbing, often sacrificing his personal climbing ambitions to develope novice climbers experience and knowledge. His knowledge, experience and attitude would make him a superb all-round Mountaineering Instructor.

He is the consummate professional who strives for excellence in all that he is involved in. As a friend we have completed alpine movement in the Alps, winter climbing within the Arctic Circle and Ski Touring in remote expeditionary locations. I have great pleasure endorsing him, and wishing him well in his future endeavours!

Tim is a keen and well rounded climber and Mountaineer who was responsible for the establishment of a training pathway for his organisation previously. He has experience climbing and teaching throughout the UK and overseas. I have predominantly climbed with him over a number of Scottish winter seasons where he has proven to be a capable and a sociable climbing partner. He enjoys sharing his skills and knowledge with others, empowering them to have their own adventures in the outdoors. The addition of his IRATA, Technical rope rescue and medical knowledge ensure a safe and rounded Instructor who can expand and offer advice from personal experiences. He has the capacity to become a reliable and respected MIC if given the opportunity. Swifty

Relationship
I have known Tim for quite a while, as a consistent reliable employee and as a friend. Tim is a very honest and trustworthy man who can be relied upon at every juncture. From a practical perspective I'm aware that Tim has been developing his outdoor leadership experience in preparation for the Mountain Instructor Certificate for which I wish him every success. Tim has a proven track record in regard to his management and supervisory skills in the outdoor industry which is reflected in his previous experiences of managing military personnel in our adventurous training centre in Scotland. During his time he executed his responsibilities to the highest of standards; his awareness of risk management is very impressive likewise his ability to encourage and empower both clients and other staff members. He will make an excellent Instructor in the Winter environment.

Dear Mountain Training I have climbed with Tim for ten years, this is both in summer and winter conditions. Within summer rock climbing we have climbed all over the UK from sea cliffs to mountain crags. Tim is exceptional at problem solving, rescues, rope work and general crag safety. Within our climbing career together we have been in some exceptionally serious positions, such as bailing off drive in Ice screws of the side of skeleton ridge, however Tim takes these in his stride with no problem too complex to solve. We have enjoyed some of the best rock climbing days I've ever had on the crag with a great friend. In winter conditions we have climbed both Scottish mixed and continental ice falls. I have seen Tim climbing solidly up WI4/5 and have swung leads with him on grade IV in Scotland. We have climbed classics such as Tower Ridge, moving with speed and efficiency. Tim took me under his wing when I first started winter climbing, showing me how to stay away from slopes and test them to see if they were avalanche prone. When you are with Tim in the hills you gain a sense from him that he is one very experienced and two can solve anything that may go wrong. In terms of instruction I know that Tim has gained all of the qualifications in the Military world up to guiding abroad and the greater ranges and has worked up to MIC training over a lengthy consolidation period. I have been dangled over many cliffs whilst practising everything to do with the MIA syllabus and know that Tim takes both his work and qualifications very seriously. Tim has spent a great deal of time working with groups of all ages and abilities and experience. I know that Tim is an outstanding candidate for the MIC and it'll be a pleasure to have someone so competent on the course. Many thanks and kind regards Tom Thorne
