I first fell in love with the Yorkshire Dales landscapes when I was 16. This inspired me to go to Lancaster University where I got a 2:1 in Geography. I then worked for various breweries from 1990 until 1997 as an area manager, then gave up my job to write walking books about the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District, Peak District, Northumberland and North York Moors. I've written 17 walking guidebooks, and am a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS).
In 2007 I decided to diversify and undertook my Walking Group Leader award, followed by my Mountain Leader (summer) in 2011. Since 2007 I have taken over 12,000 people out walking in the North of England, from map reading courses to wild camping, Yorkshire Three Peaks and corporate team events.
