I first fell in love with the Yorkshire Dales landscapes when I was 16. This inspired me to go to Lancaster University where I got a 2:1 in Geography. I then worked for various breweries from 1990 until 1997 as an area manager, then gave up my job to write walking books about the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District, Peak District, Northumberland and North York Moors. I've written 17 walking guidebooks, and am a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS).
In 2007 I decided to diversify and undertook my Walking Group Leader award (now Hill & Moorland Leader), followed by my Mountain Leader (summer) in 2011. Since 2007 I have taken over 17,000 people out walking in the North of England, from map reading and NNAS courses to wild camping, challenge walks, adventure weekends, long distance hikes and corporate team events.
