Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor 31/08/2020 3.00

My base is in the north east of Scotland, within striking distance of the Northern Highlands and the Cairngorms, where I spend most of my time. I am a climber, mountaineer and outdoor instructor who spends as much time as possible working and playing in the mountains.
I offer summer and winter guided walks, summer and winter personal mountain skills courses, summer rock climbing, and year round navigation training. I also run guided hut to hut trekking in Europe.
I am a full time outdoor instructor based in Elgin, Scotland. Previously I worked in the Expedition department at Aiglon College in Switzerland where I specialised in delivering the outdoor education programme in the Junior School.

A real Mountain professional, Calum is passionate and committed to delivering high quality. He is very knowledgeable and a pleasure to be out on the hills, mountains and crags with.

Callum is an extremely competent and conscientious instructor. I have spent days out with him winter both personally and professionally. He is first and foremost safe and considered when he is working. A very client focused instructor, he is able to keep a group interested and will strive to give them the best day out he can no matter the conditions. I have watched him apply himself extremely diligently to his own professional development and he always endeavours to improve himself. A first class outdoor enthusiast in the true sense, you can always guarantee that a day out with Callum will be safe, educational and a great deal of fun.

I first met Callum while he was studying Outdoor Education at John Moores University My role in John Moores at the time was a sessional Lecturer and so I worked with him on a number of occasions, all involving mountaineering courses both in summer and winter. Callum has observed on a few of our NGB award courses. I have assessed him for his summer ML and he has also completed his winter ML with us. Callum is mature, professional, reliable, friendly and approachable. He has a genuine interest in the outdoors and is very competent. Callum has a lot to offer in this profession Phill George IFMGA / MIC

I have known Calum for 4 years, I was his head of department at his previous place of work (Aiglon, Switzerland). Calum joined the school and it was immediately evident that he is passionate about being in the outdoor environment and introducing this environment to others, children and adults. During my time of working with him, I observed him training and going through his IML, his PSIA level 1 ski instructor, and his level 3 open canoe award. He approached all of these awards with passion and determination. Professionally in the outdoor. Calum has an immense amount of patience, he is always striving to deliver his course material appropriate for the age group, skill level and learning styles. He finds a good balance between, guided discovery and student led discovery. His hard skills were excellent for what he needed (and was qualified) to deliver. He liked being prepared for each trip but also understand the unpredictable nature of outdoor education and was able to adapt according to changes in groups sizes, weather, activity and logistics. Personally in the outdoors. It was a pleasure to be outside with Calum. He has a strong skill set, he knew areas that he would like to improve and he knew his strengths. We did a lot of ski touring, off piste skiing and multi pitch climbing together during our time in the Swiss alps. Calum was always reliable and a solid companion to be outside with, when faced with challenges (either climbing cold damp multi pitches, skiing steep couloirs or high alpine tours) he focused and always made good decisions. I have every confidence that as Calum prepares himself for his MIA, he will do so with passion, determination and a great deal of energy.

Calum worked as an expedition teacher at Aiglon College for 3 years. During that time he developed as an instructor in mountainwalking, navigation, climbing and winter activities such as snowshoeing, cross country skiing and skiing. He has a broad range of experience and skills and is always motivated to improve and develop. He is an enthusiastic instructor and has a great rapport with and interest in students of all ages. He is a good communicator and considered in his approach. He is happy to take the initiative and enjoys persoanal adventuring. I feel the MIA would be a great development for him.

Calum is a fellow Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, who I climb with both personally, and have also employed to work with my clients, including for Winter ML work. He works full time in the outdoor sector. He is totally at home in the mountains in summer and winter. I have climbed (Alternate Leads) many Scottish winter routes with Calum up to Grade IV,5, and can confirm he is personally very competent on both ice and mixed ground. I have also climbed water ice at Cogne with him. He is enthusiastic and great company, but above all is calm, safe, competent MCI who I'm sure will do very well on the WMCI scheme.
