Growing up in Scotland meant that I was lucky enough to have access to the mountains since I was a kid. Since then I’ve walked and climbed in most places in the UK, been mountaineering and ski touring in the Alps and been farther afield to Nepal, Australia and New Zealand.
I’m the director of Leading Steps Ltd a management consultancy company and I’m also a volunteer with Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team (Ashburton). I’m a Search Manager and Hill Party Leader for the rescue team and also qualified in Mountain Rescue Casualty Care.
I have both the Hill & Moorland Leader and Mountain Leader (Summer) awards and really enjoy sharing my enthusiasm of the outdoors with youth groups and adults. Checkout Leadingsteps on Dartmoor on Facebook to find out more.

It was one of those amazing days...
I always enjoy sharing my passion of the hills and mountains of Britain with others. The changing weather, changing seasons, changing colours, different terrain and of course different Clients all add to the experience we all share. Every now and again however we get one of those truly amazing days when all sorts of things come together to make it truly awesome experience for everyone. This is a little piece is about one of those days which I look back on to remind myself how lucky I am to have the opportunity to work in the outdoors.
It was a Saturday in June and I was assessor on day 2 of a Hill and Moorland Leader course for Andy Holborn. It was a typical early summer’s morning with the sun shining, a cool breeze blowing and a gentle mist hanging over the tors. As it happens sometimes it started with a blind date with me meeting the candidates in a remote car park on the western edge of Dartmoor. After an initial chat about the day to come we were off. As the candidates took it in turn to lead a navigation leg, the day warmed, visibility improved and we were all set for a fantastic experience. Dartmoor was teeming with life and awash with colours and we all saw things which we hadn't seen before like sundews and a baby skylark.
All too soon it was over, candidates were debriefed, handshakes given and received then off home. Rather than feeling tired I felt energised. It wasn’t just about being out on Dartmoor on a fabulous day but also about having the privilege of sharing the day with incredible candiates who were looking forward to sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with others. It reminded me that we all have a responsibility to our Clients and candidates to give them the best learning experience we possibly can. It we get this right them our legacies will be the continued enjoyment and appreciation of the outdoors by all those who follow us.
Needless to say all of the candidates passed their assessment.
