I have worked professionally in the outdoor industry since passing my ML and thoroughly enjoy my work. I run my own company Muddy Boots Hiking, providing guided hiking days primarily in the Brecon Beacons where I enjoy taking clients out in some of the more remote areas of the park that they might not have the confidence to visit on their own. I work overseas as an expedition leader and have lead school groups from both UK and Dubai schools in Borneo, Cambodia, Peru, Kenya and Tanzania, all of the trips have involved an adventure element of trekking, either in jungle terrain or at altitude in the mountains. I work regularly for an adventure challenge company as a walk leader, where my role is not only to lead and manage participants but to help them achieve their goals, sometimes overcoming personal challenges to get there. I find the work very rewarding and often humbling to hear the challenges people have overcome to get there. I also work as a Duke of Edinburgh instructor and assessor at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, I love working with the students and seeing their skills and confidence increase as they progress through the award.
On a personal level, am an avid hillwalker, mountaineer and climber. I am a member of the South Wales Mountaineering Club and climb with them regularly throughout the year, both indoor and outdoor. I am also the events coordinator for a hiking group called COPA, we are a small but enthusiastic group and I source, recce and lead the majority of the walks for the group. We hold at least two walks a month and visit all areas of Wales, including an annual trips to North Wales or Scotland where we tackle some of the country’s more demanding peaks. I also enjoy winter mountaineering and the challenges that it brings. My husband and I have travelled extensively through Europe and have enjoyed hiking and climbing holidays, along with a memorable trip to the Adirondack Mountains in America where we learnt to ski and ice climb.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years, and nine years ago joined a local hiking group called COPA. I soon got involved in organizing group walks and before I knew it had been made events coordinator. As I started looking for new and interesting places to take the group I began venturing further afield into the wilder, more remote areas of Wales. When I heard about the Hill & Moorland Leader Award (then the WGL) it seemed the perfect way to learn more about the countryside I love so much and to gain the confidence and experience to lead others.
Over the years hill walking has progressed to mountaineering and climbing, I’m a member of the South Wales Mountaineering Club and climb with them as often as possible, enjoying many summer evenings on the sea cliffs of Gower. The club owns a hut near Llanberis which I use at every opportunity as a base for mountaineering, or climbing in the Ogwen Valley. I especially enjoy the challenges of winter mountaineering.
I was very proud to pass my HML award, it’s something that I started doing as a hobby, but progressing through the course training and getting into the outdoors to achieve all I needed to for the award made me realize that hill walking and mountaineering had become much more to me than just a hobby.
Up until this point I had worked for 17 years as a press photographer, but in what was a rapidly changing industry I decided to take the plunge, quit my job and concentrate on completing my ML with a view to working professionally in the outdoor industry.
I set up my own company called Muddy Boots Hiking, taking people on guided hikes all over south and mid Wales, and also started working as a freelance both in the UK and abroad as a guide and expedition leader.
