John was a candidate on a Level 3 Certificate in BEL Course provided by myself in the summer of 2012. He acquitted himself well during the course, and completed all modules in an efficient and enthusiastic manner. John demonstrated good communication skills, and also that he could supervise and manage a group responsibly. Care and consideration of group size and age was given, according to the venue. I recommended that he undertake Mountain Leader Training, and anticipate that he will continue the good work.

Having worked with John on a recent Three Peaks event we experienced quite difficult conditions on the Scafell Pike Leg. It was dark with very heavy rain. This combined with an inexperienced group would test the most experienced Mountain Leader. John showed that he is more than capable of keeping in touch with the groups needs, thus allowing decisions to be made that were in the interests of the whole group. As is the case with many of these events it is difficult to balance the interests of every member of the group and some diplomacy is required to achieve this. Again John was able to give options to the group as a whole that allowed them to be part of the decision making process and allowing the best decisions to be made without alienating any part of the group. A very worthwhile skill to have.
