Joel is very commited to developing his own skills and is always safe and professional when working with groups. Joel coaches beginner climbers and supervises belaying on a regular basis on man made towers as part of his role as a Trainee Instructor at the Pioneer Centre. Joel focuses much of his free time on gaining personal experience in the outdoors and logging hours for climbing and walking qualifications.

Joel assisted me at an Open Day event at Corsham Leisure Centre, running taster sessions (mostly for kids) at their climbing wall. Joel displayed excellent people skills, giving the kids basic instruction along with support and encouragement ensuring they enjoyed the experience and got on as well as they were able. His approach was professional and friendly with good attention to ensuring safety at all times. He was also a pleasant person to work with and I wish him well in his CWA.

Joel was on a BMC Fundamentals 1&2 I was delivering at Redpoint Climbing Centre in Birmingham. He was an active member of the group participating not only in the practical elements but also the discussions and group delivery sections, we used the IDEAS model for all delivery elements. As an up and coming instructor/coach I have every confidence in Joel and look forward to seeing how his career in the Climbing Industry progresses.

I worked with Joel on the 25th and 26th March 2017 as a practice client for my MIA assessment. Joel already had wide range of non-rock climbing experience when it comes to rope-work, he was very keen to learn new techniques associated with trad climbing. I found that he picked up new methods very quickly and had an excellent attention to detail throughout the two days. There was not one unscrewed karabiner! The second day was spent at Tremadog where Joel led 4 pitches ranging from S to HS, again he had a great attention to detail and every action was done with consideration. Joel had brought along two friends/mentees who he has been helping with their climbing development. This was their first time trad climbing. He has dedicated a lot of his time to the development of the two of them. He is an absolute role-model to them and i thought it was great how he is inspiring them to develop themselves in climbing. Since our two days I have seen he has taken them out for more trad and sport climbing. Joel is keen to progress into SPA and ML, I have no doubt he will make an excellent instructor in each of these areas.

I met Joel about 2 years ago when I started climbing at our local wall. I was immediately impressed with his approach to Climbing and teaching/coaching others. Our friendship grew stronger when he became the in house instructor at the wall. We often climb together away from the indoor centre where he has been helping train for my upcoming RCI training. Without Joel’s support and coaching I would not be ready for it. He has refreshed my leading skills, route setting and gear placement, vital skills a climber needs. Which I had forgotten having been away from Climbing for almost 20 years. All the Adult climbers new and seasoned go to Joel for advice on all aspects of Climbing whether it be a new piece of equipment or techniques and he ALWAYS makes time to help. This is because his knowledge base is always up to date. If he doesn’t know the answer he will go out of his way to find it, AWESOME! I have a saying “if Joel don’t know, it ain’t worth knowing” Joel has a genuine passion for coaching both novice and seasoned climbers. The way he teaches is exemplary, he feeds back constructively and explains things thoroughly and clearly. He has shown this by not only coaching myself but with the junior climbers on courses he runs. He teaches the juniors in a fun and engaging way so they learn the fundamental skills to climb. Would I recommend Joel to anyone who wishes to take up the sport or needs coaching? Yes! without hesitation he is probably one of the best, most helpful climbing instructors In the south west, and definitely the best I’ve ever worked with. Keep up the great work mate!
