Throughout my life the outdoors has played a huge part and working in education has enabled me to continue this passion and to pass it on to the young people I have had the pleasure of teaching. As a qualified teacher of PE, and having majored in Outdoor Education, I also hold Mountain Leader (Summer) and SPA in rock climbing alongside having mentored Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions over many years. My role in schools has allowed me to work with a broad spectrum of young people, from primary to sixth form, and from very diverse backgrounds.
Within the school environment I have progressed to senior leader, which has equipped me with many additional skills to take into outdoor work. I work as part of a progressive team, reacting to, and dealing with, many pressures and daily challenges. I need to be organized, flexible and am often innovative in approaching a problem. I am responsible for managing several staff members, encouraging and motivating them to achieve their best – something which I feel the outdoor environment lends itself to. I have organised very successful problem solving and team building days within school, and this is an area I feel is a particular strength, both with young people and adults. Throughout my career I have run many residential trips to outdoor centres and ski trips abroad, and feel very proud seeing the progression the children make, both in their level of skill and in their confidence.
As a child growing up in the Highlands of Scotland, the outdoors has always been part of my life. I take part in both summer and winter mountaineering in many parts of the country, and am an accomplished skier both in Scotland and abroad. I regularly run mountain marathons and participate in mountain biking.
