Hello, my name is Lathan Ball and I have been a keen mountaineer and photographer for over 35 years. I began walking as a teenager with my parents in the Pennines (Weardale and Teesdale), developed basic mountain skills through school and scouts and at London University was vice-president and president of the mountaineering club - organising regular trips to the Lake District, Snowdonia, Peak District and winter trips to Scotland (completing classic mountain walks and climbing competently to winter Grade IV).
Over the years I have enjoyed walking in many different countries and environments. Outside of the UK I have walked and climbed in the Pyrenees, Alps, New Zealand and USA. A highlight was organising and leading an expedition to Nepal - completing the Annapurna Circuit and climbing to 19,500ft on Chuli East (22,486ft). During this trip I particularly enjoyed working with the Sherpas and porters and meeting people from different cultures. Over the last few years I have enjoyed walking with my family, introducing them to the mountains and helping them develop their skills and abilities.
I am excited by mountain photography and the challenge of capturing the timeless grandeur of the mountain landscape, the beauty of the ever-changing light and the individual character of each ascent. Many people asked me about my mountain photographs, the places they portrayed and how I recorded the images. As a result of these questions I established Mountain Explorer TM to provide high quality mountain photography courses, workshops, guided walks and photography adventures to off the beaten track locations.
