Teaching Jamming Skills from Beginner to Somewhat Proficient | 26/08/2022 | 1.00 |
I was a member of the venture scouts and completed my Bronze, Silver and Gold DofE awards while a teenager. This started my love of the outdoor and the night navigation completions honed my compass skills. I started climbing in 1994 at Aberystwyth University and fell in love with it straight away. My climbing apprenticeship took place on the cliffs of Tremadog and in the Llanberis pass. After graduating I worked in a outdoor centre in Ireland for a year before returning to Wales to complete a Science PGCE at Bangor. Teaching is something I’m passionate about and I found that I really loved introducing people to the outdoors and teaching them new skills.
I have since become a freelance outdoor instructor and climbing coach. Through the DofE award I can watch young people grow in confidence in the outdoor environment and learn new skills. The outdoors provides the perfect setting for people to step outside their comfort zones.
As a climbing development coach I get to help people realise their potential climbing, both inside and out. It is a real privilege to be able to pass on the love of a sport.
My own climbing and running means that I am constantly pushing myself to develop and gives me empathy with both beginners and advanced athletes.
Becca has coached at The Climbing Works for 13 years. She is a well rounded coach and has alot of experience working with both kids and adults, inside and out. As part of her role she has helped to develop yearly sessions plans for regular clubs, design session plans for our adult beginner and improver sessions and also create a scheme of work for Sheffield Hallam University as part of their outdoor education degree. As well as working with groups, Becca has alot of experience working individually with children and adults and creating training programs for them. I would highly recommend Becca for the performance coaching scheme as she is passionate about developing her skills and this would be the next obvious step for her.

I met Becca whilst delivering her RCDI training and assessment. I delivered plenty of mountain training courses (over 750) and I can say she is one of the best coaches/instructors I have assessed. She is excellent at building rapport with clients and has a keen eye for detail whilst observing and analysing their performance. She has a wealth of climbing tasks/drills/exercises that bring the best out of her clients from all aspects (TTPP). Her feedback is timely, specific and accurate. I was so impressed by her that since the assessment we've co-delivered coaching movement CPD workshops for AMI and MTA members at Stanage. These workshops focus on how to improve clients climbing techniques and performance and have been very well received. I have no hesitation in recommending her for the performance coach pathway. She will make an excellent performance coach.
