Taking my cue from 'The Ascent of Rum Doodle', I would describe myself as a mountaineer-scientist. As such my relationship with the hills and uplands has more to do with my work as a geologist, palaeontologist and life-long natural historian and that is what I aim to deliver to people through my company 'Hills of Hame.' Although I still undertake some independent research work, I have left the academic rat race to work for myself. I am now based out of Edinburgh but have lived and worked in a number of places in Scotland. My other relevant interests are fell-running, bird-watching, mountain-biking as an aid to getting to remote hills.

- Ph. D. Geophysical Sciences (Palaeobiology)
- M. Sc. Palaeobiology
- B. Sc. Geology and Applied Geology
- BASP Advanced First-Aid
- DofE Expedition Supervisor and Assessor for multiple Licensed Organisations and AAPs (since 2016)
- NNAS provider and tutor
Experience (outside of the DLOG)
- Ten years of postdoctoral research in palaeobiology/palaeontology
- Lectured and ran academic courses in universities and natural history museums
- Worked managing outdoor equipment stores for North Lanarkshire Council (August to October 2019).
- Medic and scientist on scientific expedition to Svalbard (2013)
- Work for Rescue Medics as an outdoor first responder for events (2012 to present)
- Co-ordinate first-aid kit stocking and arranging training for Carnethy Hill Running Club
