I'm retired now, although still supporting DofE Groups, after being a Principal of a very small school, with a strong family ethos. Well with my mother starting the school 34yrs ago, it would be strange if it wasn’t. We do loads of Outdoor pursuits, we are all about building children's confidence & more often than not, their parents too. Our children leave our little school feeling they can take on anything, highly articulate & ready for the changing world around them.
Duke of Edinburgh, I'm an Award leader, supervisor & assessor. I just love this award. For the expeditions I take my Bronze by foot, leads into Ten Tors, Silver by Bike, really torn between mountain & road, love them both. I cycled JOGLE (John O’Groats to Land's End) along the back roads, with my wife & can be found out most nights at silly O’clock with my Red Setter carving up the trails. Gold by Canoe, in Southern France, given the chance that is, as it's the children's award & they take me where they please.
I work hard to get them to take me somewhere new each time, if i'm lucky & I usually am. You make your luck in my book :-)
I’m very practical, converted my own VW Camper, built several canoes. My pride & joy at this moment in time is my Greenland Sea Kayak, made the traditional way, timber frame, peged & tied by sinew, with a sewn on outer skin.
I'm blessed with 4 girls, who I am immensely proud of, can always be found with a high maintenance dog, Willow our Red Setter, in school with me every day.
My glass is always 3/4 full, I can squeeze 63 minutes out of an hour, yes I'm always running late & my deep booming laugh gives you waning of my approach.
Oooo & I love adventure racing..... who wouldn't!
See you soon John

So I love the outdoors & am passionate about getting children outside.
I love William Arthur Ward's poem 'Only a person who risks is free'.
I'm a farmer's son, brought up on a wet bleak dairy farm in North Devon, I just loved it.
I took the long way up to get my ML, I'd been training teams for Ten Tors & The Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions for some time (Ten Tors Team manager since 2002) & to ensure I had the qualifications to do what I was doing, first took the South West Mountain & Moorland Leader Training Scheme (SWMML) Summer Moorland Camping Leader, then keen to expand my knowledge took the Walking Group Leader. My ML was hard work as I had little steep hill experience, but some wonderful weeks with Stuart Johnson Mountaineering up in Scotland sorted that.
Water is my element, I celebrated my 50th with 50 wild swims in a day starting at Budleigh Salterton & finishing in our beloved Polzeath, water was running out of the school van all day long. I'm a BASC open water instructor, swimming teacher, Kayak (L3K 5* Kayak) & Canoe instructor, keen sailor & surfer, RLSS instructor, if i'm not in, on, under or next to the water, I'm not happy :-)
I'm a passionate skier, tried snowboarding, the feedback was interesting....... I've been taking groups skiing every year since 1980 & just can't get enough of the mountain environment.
I'm trying to finish my Forest Leader course, the folio is not enthusing me, but the work outside with the children really does.
Starting the National SENCO postgrad course this 2016, which I'm really looking forward to.
