I am a resourceful and effective teacher and mountain leader with a passion for the outdoors and 20 years of experience in leading groups of young people. My focus has always been on personal development and the safe learning of outdoor skills.
I have taught across the ability range during my career; from ‘A’ level students to pupils with severe learning difficulties. Most recently I have been the Deputy and acting Headteacher of a residential special school for boys with Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties. I have also taught special needs students in a Middle school in New Mexico for a year. In all these posts I have used outdoor learning to enhance the educational experience of my students.
Travel Experience: In Autumn 2013 I jointly led an expedition to Everest base camp where the team were snowed in for 3 nights. The expedition was the subject of a BBC documentary ‘The Highest Classroom on Earth’. I led a school group to Borneo in June 2015 with Outlook expeditions and to the Indian Himalaya in 2016. Also in 2016 I led adult charity groups on the TMB and the Tour de Monte Rosa. I have worked on a research station in Zimbabwe studying Tsetse fly and visited 9 other countries in Africa. I have travelled widely in the USA, Canada, Mexico and Europe and walked and climbed extensively in the Alps, Pyrenees and Rockies.

I grew up in North West Ireland with a view of the hills of Donegal which gave me my first experience of the mountains. A career teacher for most of my adult life I left full time teaching in 2015 as the Deputy Head of a residential special school. I gained my summer ML award in 1996 and during my teaching career used it to enrich the experiences of my pupils with expeditions to Dartmoor, Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia as well as a memorable trek to Everest base camp. Since 2015 I have gained my International ML and undergone training for Winter ML and Single Pitch Award. Since 2015 I have led youth expeditions to Borneo, the Indian Himalaya and Zambia; adults trekkers on the Tour de Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa; worked with an International School trekking in Switzerland and Tanzania; climbed Mt Kenya, Gran Paradiso and Monte Rosa; undertaken training and assessment of DofE expeditions for several providersin England; run forest school programmes in local schools in Bath and facilitated 'survival nights' in the woods for birthday parties. I still occasionally do supply teaching at local special schools which keeps me in tune with developments in education. A varied diet!
I am available for adventures from Bath to Bhutan. Please call, text or e-mail.
