About

Avalanche Awareness and Transceiver Training

Avalanche is probably the greatest potential danger the winter hill-goer is exposed too and understanding avalanche mechanisms and security as a group leader is paramount. The workshop will cover a lot of information from theory to practical tasks and training exercises to help understanding and learning. The workshop is designed to run without snow. During the workshop we will cover the following areas:

Morning

- Ingredients for avalanche

- Mapping the risk

- Anatomy of snow

- Avalanche forecasts and interpretation

- Being Avalanche Aware

- Key avalanche indicators

- Snow pits and their relevance

- The UIMLA Standard and IML terrain

Afternoon

- Transceivers in general

- Uderstanding antennas

- Interference

- Transceiver checks as an IML

- Shovels & probes

- Practicing with single and multiple 'burials' - methods

- Shovelling technique and its importance

- Prioritizing resources/triage

- Heuristics and false sense of security

The workshop will be indoors for the morning and outside in the grounds for a couple of hours in the afternoon so bring suitable attire for both.
