WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES
During this one-day workshop we will explore the geology of Glen Nevis/Stob ban as an exemplair of mountain building processes and geological features of Scotland's Caledonian mountains. Conditions depending the day will comprise a round of Stob Ban viw the North Ridge or shorter excursion onto Stob Ban followed by a walk up Glen Nevis. We will see exceptional examples of extreme folding and metamorphism produced buth by deep burial (regional metamorphism) and close proximity to Granite intrusions (contact metamorphism).
By the end of the day you should have an understanding of:
-The plate tectonic and geologuical context of the Caledonian Orogeny.
-Interactions between crustal thickening, metamorphism and brittle/ductile deformation.
-The metamorphic rocks found in Scotland's mountains and their P-T conditions of formation.
-How geological features seen at outcrop scale can be used to intyerpret the large-scale tectonic history of a region.
