WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES
Join David and Katy for a wonderful pre xmas Winter Solstice Day in Sherwood Forest!
This is another new, innovative event for us. This will be a slower, calm day, connecting with nature and giving you a taster of some real practical tips and techniques which will augment your work in the outdoors. However, it's Christmas so we will be visiting the Major Oak (truly awesome giant oak tree which is a sight to behold!) and there will be some mindfulness activities and minbending facts with facts and fables about the forest which you can pass on to entertain your guests!
What Christmas walk would be complete without mince pies too!! Keep your eyes pealed - you may spot Rudolf or the eleves busying themselves in the forest too - if we're super lucky we might even spot Robin Hood!
We won’t be observing contour features or spot heights but we will be looking around us and engaging with the environment in a different way. The benefits of Forest Bathing for your mental and physical health are well documented and now supported by robust peer reviewed publications in scientific journals. If you are expecting an energetic race across the moors then this is not the event for you. If you are interested and open to the benefits that nature can bring us all then it is!
Our objectives for the day are to give you some new skills, encourage you to engage with nature differently in your practice and to send you away feeling refreshed and rejuvenated after having spent a mindful time with us. Also it's going to be a lovely social pre Christmas event with lots of fun and laughing.
The day starts at 09.30 at the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre in Edwinstow (GR: SK 62660 67115 ). There is a charge to park here for the day and we suggest arriving early to get a space.
The Workshop will last for approximately 5.5 hours (09.30 – 15.00) with a debrief afterwards in the café or hostelry.
This will give you the opportunity to discuss the event, get to know other MTA members and support a local business over a hot drink or adult beverage.
EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED
An open mind and curiosity!
Your personal walking kit appropriate for the forecasted weather conditions and rough ground conditions. That could include clothing and equipment suitable for walking in rain and windproof jacket (with hood) and over trousers, sturdy walking boots (knee-length gaiters also recommended), plenty of warm insulation layers, hats and gloves if required.
You will find it useful to have something to sit or lie down on such as a Sit Mat, small stool or long mat.
We will use OS Explorer OL120 for our route - it isn't necessary for you to have one but if you want to bring one - either laminated or in a good map case so that you can do some nav practice along the way. Also a navigation compass, a personal first aid kit, any medication you need and your mobile phone. It may also be wise to either carry an emergency group shelter or a plastic emergency bivvy bag and a headtorch with batteries. As this is a peer-led event you are for your own safety and well-being. If you have any medical conditions which might affect you during the workshop, you should notify the leaders. NB You won’t be using the map or compass as part of the event but we suggest you have one for your own personal safety.
CATERING/FOOD
You will need to bring food and drink for a day of lowland walking away from shops and facilities. There is a visitor centre and cafe where you can get hot drinks and snacks at the start - we're pretty sure that we will end up there at some point!
