Award Description

This qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to supervise climbers on purpose built artificial climbing walls and boulders. The scheme does not include the skills and techniques required to teach lead climbing.

The Climbing Wall Instructor Assessment course is £110 + wall entry with full course information sent on booking.    

You will also be required to bring along two non-climbers to teach on the assessment from 12.30. You will need to sign them and pay their wall entry on arrival  

Course Program 

Homework: Planning and structure of sessions  

• Plan a 20min coaching session with a warm up  

• 4 week plan for a NICAS level 1 course  

Personal climbing with focus on:   

• Harness  

• Tying in   

• Buddy Checks  

• Bottom rope belaying with range of devices  

• Safe use of auto belays  

• Lead belaying and lead climbing at grade 4  
    

Managing and Supervising Others  

• Fitting a range of harnesses (personal, centre, full body, sit and chest combo)  

• Tying another climber in  

• Teaching and managing belaying  

• Managing weight differences with a range of solutions and ground anchors  

• Peer role play  

• Teaching 2 novice climbers  

Managing and Supervising Bouldering  

• Run a warm up  

• Deliver a safety brief  

• Fun bouldering game or movement technique   

Teaching & Learning  

• Peer teaching sessions  

• Signing in two novice climbers and deliver a 2hour introduction to climbing.  

Problem Solving  

• Simple solutions to common problems  

• Prevention over cure  

• Climber not able to sit back  

• Hair stuck   

• Taking over the belay  

• Tying off a belay device  

• Theory paper questions
